- Volumeteer experience in Nepal
I got the opportunity to volunteer with an orphanage on the outskirts of Kathmandu in Nepal.
The month long experience started with a big welcome party where they held some dances and ate some rice curry. Following that the team of volunteers met with the co-ordinating Pastor to organize a program for the 17 orphan children who were living in the home.
The ages varied from 5 years old to 14 years old. I really felt welcomed and as from Day 1 they started calling me ‘Brother’. We organised exercise classes in the morning which would give an energetic start to the typical day. Then after a short tea break we would start very Basic English lessons.
Along the way I learnt all the children’s names and participated in their everyday life so much that you begin to feel like a local.
I was shopping from the local grocery stores and washing my clothes by hand next to a public tap, getting to know the people’s life stories.
As other Volunteers often say during such experiences you will gain much more than you can ever give. Throughout all this Nepal is a country I will never forget.
